Charles Christofle born in 1805, began his profession as a jeweller. His skilled craftsmanship drew the interest of Louis-Philippe I and subsequently Napoleon III. Christofle designed opulent pieces and tableware for French palaces and notable clients. The Christofle company debuted a new type of plate named 'Gallia metal' in 1900, during the Paris Exposition Universelle. In the 17th century, knife rests first appeared on the tables of grand formal dinners. Knife rests are used to prevent table linens from getting stained.
